Promoting and supporting local farmers and cottage industries is the objective of the Preston Farmer’s Market, which is scheduled to debut during the first week in June.
The new organization has been set up to help local farmers and creators find new markets by building a more sustainable community and marketplace for locally grown products.
Encouraged by Four County Alliance of Southeast Idaho Executive Director Molly Beseris, a group of local women have organized a board to oversee the new venture.
“This is about ag. This is about building up a community of farmers and consumers,” said Melanie Keller president of the nonprofit. Helping her are Aly Cole, Jessica Smith, Jenni Barnett and Chloe Simanton — an all-volunteer board. They are seeking additional volunteers to help run the weekly summer event. It is set to open on June 5, from 5-8 p.m.
Persons interested in marketing their products must submit a request that will be juried by the board. They are looking for:
• farmers and cottage industry producers who live locally. First priority will be for those living within 100 miles of Preston.
• producers, growers, and gatherers; those who cultivate, gather, harvest, and/or raise their own vegetables, flowers, fruits, herbs, plants, small animals and animal products for public sale. No commercial produce will be allowed.
• cottage industries which create or handcraft their own products from raw materials.
• food producers or processors that make value added, ready-to-eat products from agricultural or food material in accordance with all Idaho Health District regulations.
The market will be held at the Lion’s Shelter in the City Park on Wednesdays, beginning May 24. Booth spaces will be available for juried vendors at $50 adn $60 per booth, depending on size (10’X10’ or 10’X20’).
Vendor applications may be submitted up until May 13, and can be obtained by emailing prestonidfarmersmarket@gmail.com, then mailed to Preston Farmer’s Market , P.O. Box 269, Preston, ID 83263. Up to 100 vendors can be accommodated at the venue.
Currently sponsoring the event are the Franklin County Extension Office, Preston City, the Preston Lions Club and Altabank.
