West Side brought home two 2A State Wrestling titles from the Idaho State Championships on Feb. 23-24 in Pocatello.
Colten Gundersen (160) defended his state title and reigned supreme with victories over Brady Vergobbi (Kellogg) by Fall 4:38, Dylan Moss (Malad) by Dec 5-2, Aiden Yearout (St. Maries) by Dec 7-4 and Russell Noah (Tri-Valley) by Fall 2:59. In doing so he became the second-ever two-time state champion from West Side.
Gavin Peterson (120) also took first, defeating Orion Grimes (Priest River) by major decision 14-6, Tayven Kunz (Ririe) 4by Fall 1:33, Ches Lee Webb (Ririe) by Fall 3:54 and two-time defending state champion Gabe Muilenburg (Glenns Ferry) by Dec 5-0 who he lost to last season in the finals.
Four other Pirates made it to the placement rounds. Finalist Colter Barzee (106-pound weight class) who finished second, Michael Roberts (4th place, 98), Stellar Tew (4th, 138) and Ben Jensen (5th, 285).
Thomas Westover and Kale Breckencamp also scored points for the Pirates to help them bring home fourth place as a team. West Side finished with 127 points to the Cougars’ 122.5. Malad claimed the team title with 183.5 points, followed by New Plymouth (159 points) and Kellogg (155).
