Preceding the regularly scheduled council meeting on April 10, the city held a public hearing for citizens McKay and Kira Graybill. The couple requested a variance to construct their home at 161 E. Legacy Court.
The maximum ridge height according the local building code is 25 feet, and their adjusted height raises that ruling to 32 feet, conforming to the HOA roof pitch of 6/12. The added height will increase the home’s energy efficiency. There was no public argument for the request, and the council approved it as the first item on the agenda at the regular 7 p.m. meeting.
Several yearly reports and requests filled the bulk of the meeting. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Maddie Soto represented CAPSA to update the city on their services. Soto reported more than 300 claims in the Cache Valley area between January and April for victims of physical and sexual abuse. There will be a public conference on May 29 at USU, to discuss these issues, and the Preston hospital is currently working to acquire a space for CAPSA locally.
Amy Manning laid out the annual report for the Triple I-A (III-A) Trust, which covers the city employees for health insurance. The company offers medical, vision, dental, mental health, and wellness clinics to include the total health needs of their clients.
Once a year the council is required to read, adopt, and sign the Fair Housing Resolution and Fair Housing Proclamation to assure equal housing opportunities locally. Those items were passed and signed.
A newly rewritten Emergency Response Plan was presented and approved following 20 years of neglect. Mayor Packer expressed satisfaction with the new plan, and feels more prepared to face future city emergencies.
As a final note, Packer reported on the dredging under Parkinson Bridge. As the river continues to rise this spring, there should be no need for sand bags, and the new bridge construction should begin within the next year.
