DAYTON – West Side’s defense shone brightly Thursday evening in Dayton when the team dominated visiting North Fremont in the opening round of the state football playoffs, winning 36-8.

The first five minutes of the first quarter was exciting and eventful. The first big play was a 45-yard run by senior Jon O’Brien. Quarterback Trevor Montes scored a touchdown on the following play.

In the second quarter Senior Tate Fuller made an amazing play that you had to see to believe. Fuller caught the ball in the end zone while falling backwards. A North Fremont player should’ve intercepted it. But Fuller grabbed the ball while on his back and hauled it in for the touchdown, making the score 20-0.

Head Coach Tyson Moser said he was a little concerned about how his team would react to the Huskies’ 2-6 season record. “But I’m proud of how the kids came out and played, especially on defense. The kids did a great job of executing what they were told to do,” he said. “North Fremont is a better team than their record shows.”

West Side is now 7-2, winning seven straight games. North Fremont fell to 2-7 on the year. The Pirates limited the Huskies to just 64 yards of total offense and most of that came in the fourth quarter when Moser pulled most of this first string. In fact at the close of the first half, West Side had limited North Fremont to minus 18 yards on 16 plays.

West Side’s Neils Stegelmeier, with the assistance of Dillyn Morgan, recovers a fumble Thursday night in a first-round state football game against North Fremont. West Side won and advances to play New Plymouth on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Holt Arena.

The Huskies employ an option running attack and Moser praised his defense for shutting that down. Moser also complimented the defensive coaches for their efforts in preparing the team.

Meanwhile West Side totaled 311 yards of total offense, including 212 on the ground. O’Brien ran for 99 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries. Montes rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another.

West Side will now advance in the playoff bracket and faces New Plymouth this Thursday at 8 p.m. in Holt Arena in Pocatello. “Our goal is to always be playing football in November and now we can,” said Moser.
