The West Side track team is having an exciting season this year. With the district tournament coming up, the team is hard at work preparing.
Sydney Blair, captain for the girls team, holds four school records, breaking two of those four this year.
Participating in two relay teams, she’s less than a second away from breaking two more records.
Girls head coach Amanda Hansen said Blair could win whole meets just by herself. “The rest of us are hanging out like the excited little sister who gets to tag along with the big sister, just basking in her victory glow and loving every minute of it.”
One of the great strengths of the track team is its depth. Senior Kelsie Clawson is ranked first in state in hurdles. Another strength is the talent of the younger team members. Freshman Taya Nash is ranked in the top five in hurdles.
“The great thing about Taya is she doesn’t realize she’s a freshmen and shouldn’t be winning so much yet.
“She burns it up at every meet and beats girls with years more experience. It’s frustrating for them and fortuitous for us,” Hansen said.
