City controls variance, special-use permits

Preston City leaders took control over a variance and special-use permit procedure Monday following a public hearing that no one attended.

In the past the city’s planning and zoning board had the authority to grant variances and issue special-use permits. Council action this fall suspended that authority.

The council now becomes the governing body to grant those requests. Mayor Hendrickson said the council has for some time thought it should have more direct control over these types of matters.

The council also approved amending a zoning ordinance to permit blacksmith, welding and metal fabrication uses in a light industrial zone (West Oneida).

In other action, the council:

• approved several business licenses.

• convened an executive session to discuss personnel.
