Orders are now being taken by the Franklin County Senior Citizens Center (Community Center) for Thanksgiving Day pies and rolls. Loyal customers seem to appreciate the efforts those at the center make in their behalf during the Thanksgiving rush to get to “Grandma’s” house.
Thanksgiving is just over a week away, and it’s time to seriously start thinking about placing orders. You may call the center at 852-2844.
“We have two main fundraising activities at the center this time of year,” said manager Carol Parker. “The first one occurs the Thursday prior to Thanksgiving, Nov. 15, when we prepare and deliver Thanksgiving dinners for merchants and their employees.
“The following day on Friday, Nov. 16, we prepare a Thanksgiving dinner to serve to the general public at the center. We are inviting anyone and everyone to come out and support us that day as well.”
Parker said as soon as center employees and volunteers get done with this project, they launch full steam ahead into making pies and rolls for the general public to pick up the day before Thanksgiving, on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
“This is all by special order. Last year we made more pies and rolls than we have ever done before. We are hoping that trend will continue.”
During the two weeks prior to Thanksgiving 2011, employees and volunteers at the center used over 1,500 pounds of flour, making over 1,000 turkey dinners, hundreds of pumpkin and other pies and over 800 dozen rolls.
Parker starts her days the week of Thanksgiving around 3 a.m. and doesn’t get home until well into afternoon.
