At 10 years old, Kyalynn Johnston has found a cause she can spend the rest of her life pursuing. The daughter of Jill James Parrish and Tom Johnston has seen the devastation that cancer has reaped on people around her.

She wanted to find a way to help.

Kyalynn Johnston gives Kris Cole a hug last Thursday while visiting him at his home in Preston. Johnston raised money to help him through some of the medical expenses incurred from treating a brain tumor.

“Kyalynn wanted to raise funds for a family friend she knew who was suffering with cancer, with hope it would help them recover. The person she wanted to raise the money for was in the last stages of cancer and the money probably wouldn’t help him,” her mother said.

So the Oakwood Elementary student began the search for someone else, who she could raise money for.

She found Kris Cole, 20, who is going through a second bout with a brain tumor.

“I heard about him and felt bad and wanted to do something for him,” Kyalynn said.
