A “Shop Local First” campaign was explained to the Preston City Council Monday by Paul Swainston, president of the Greater Preston Business Association.
“Our organization has yard signs, signs for merchants to put in their windows and signs for vehicles. We want to distribute as many signs as possible as a reminder to everyone to shop in the community first before heading south or north,” he told the council.
“We think the signs can have an impact.
“We want to change the mind-set of local residents. If we can increase local spending by 20 percent it will certainly help.
“Every time we spend a dollar locally, it circulates at least seven times. Every time we spend locally we help local businesses and if merchants get busier, then more local folks will get hired.”
Swainston made a plea to the council for funding for the campaign.
