Police to be extra vigilant patrolling for fireworks violations

By ROBERT MERRILL

Assistant editor

Preston City police officers will be patrolling the community watching for illegal use of fireworks during this year’s July 4 holiday and throughout the entire month.

Police Chief Val Sparrow said only “safe and sane” fireworks can be used by residents and sold at fireworks stands.

“We plan to be extra vigilant in our patrols this summer because of the dry and hot conditions and potential for fires,” he said.

“Safe and sane fireworks mean they have to be ground-based. Anything that leaves the ground and travels higher than 20 feet is illegal. Anything that leaves the ground traveling more than a 15-foot diameter is also illegal.
