A cause of a $5 million fire on March 7 that destroyed a grain mill at Valley Wide Co-op (Franklin County Grain Growers) 264 S. State, Preston, is still under investigation by fire officials.
Fire District Fire Marshal Scott Martin said the area where the fire started has been pinpointed after reviewing several pictures of the event.
“The fire did not begin in the actual grain elevators. It started in an attached building west of the elevators. We’re still piecing things together. Sometimes it takes awhile. Officials from the state fire marshal are assisting,” he said.
Meanwhile, Valley Wide location manager Steve Hinckley said a firm from Iowa spent a week vacuuming out grain in adjacent silos.
