This last week the West Side Track Team traveled to Malad for their very first meet of the year. Since it was the first meet, no scores were recorded. West Side competed against three other teams: Malad, Rockland, and Bear Lake.

There were a few standout individuals. From the boys’ team West Side had Tyler Olsen running very well in the 3200m with a time of 10:28. He is expected to have an amazing year.

Also John O’Brien sprinting the 200m in 23.67 will help out the Pirate’s relay teams in the next few meets to come. Paul Stegelmeier pulled off an amazing throw in the shotput, throwing a 38-8.

Coach Hansen, his throwing coach, is very ecstatic about him and Harlee Wolfley as they both are excelling in their throwing events. Mason Lemmon ended up shocking everyone in the high jump as he went a 6-1. After not doing track last year, he is looking very promising for this track season.

Coach Moser is excited about his team this year.

As for the girls, Cherise Alder long-jumped a 13-1. Harlee Wolfley PRed in her shotput throwing a 31-7. It is very rare for throwers to be PRing so early in the season and Coach Hansen can’t wait to see how much more she can improve.

Kelsie Clawson ran the 100 hurdles in 18.25 and is looking reasonably strong for her hurdling events. Casey Rich and Caitlyn Beckstead are both doing well in their sprinting events. Coach Hansen is excited about the distant runners and knows they will contribute quite a few points for the team.

“Our expectation for this year is to take more girls to state than ever before,” said Coach Hansen, “and our level of returning talent is looking great. We are going to try to live up to our District Title.”

District track meet will be held at American Falls on Wednesday, March 21.
