Girls and their mothers gathered around Candice Burns as she talked to them about make-up techniques during the seminar for Distinguished Young Women as they prepare to compete in this year's scholarship program.

Fourteen young women from around the county were treated to a seminar last week, in preparation for the annual Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Franklin County Farm Bureau.

The seminar included a make-up consultation class, demonstrated by Candace Burns; interview skills, taught by Becky Child Johnson, former Jr. Miss; a class on stage to show proper walking skills, with Laurie and Lakin Hemsley; and a motivational speaker, Karen Child, who emphasized each girl should be their best self. Lakin is the 2011 Distinguished Young Woman and has represented Franklin County throughout the year. Talia Jensen, Taylor Slade, Abbey Child, Mckenna Jepsen and Jeni Spackman, last year’s court to Lakin, were on stage for a fashion show following a nutritional break.

This year’s theme for the event is Fireworks, and the script is written by Shari Turnbow. It will be held April 14, at the Dahle Fine Arts building in Dayton. Tickets will go on sale in March. Julie Smith and Vickie Henderson are co-chairs for the program, which is open to any high school junior within the county.
