Juvanne Martin, president of the Idaho Genealogical Society, is seeking volunteers to help with the 1940 Idaho portion of the US Census index.
The National Archives and Records Administration will digitally release the information April 1. Later censuses are not available because of a 72 year restriction access for privacy reasons.
The Idaho population 72 years ago was 524,873 residents.
FamilySearch.org has created a 1940 Census Indexing Project and they have asked the Idaho Genealogical Society to help and they, in turn, are asking Idahoans to help in this endeavor.
“When the 1940 index is released in April, it will not contain an index, unlike previous censuses. That means people will have to know the enumeration of districts in each city that their Idaho ancestry resided in, this is a huge problem,” Martin said.
