With 27 teams competing at the 4A classification this weekend at the Idaho State Wrestling Tournament in Pocatello on Friday and Saturday, the Preston Indians battled to seventh place overall in team points, the best team showing in years.
This strong effort wraps up the inaugural season for head coach Justin Torfin, and his first-year assistants Dustin Olsen and Robert Bowles. Preston’s team points were fueled in part with a win from Rylee Hobbs, Cade Nicholls, and Tyson Hall, and with two wins from Daniel Larson.
This time around, too, the Indian wrestlers doubled the number of state placers from last year: Cameron Dietrich wrestled his way to sixth place and a medal at 113 pounds, and Kieton Keller, Peter Gregory, and Brandon “Bubba” Fitzgerald each clinched third place and a medal in their respective weight classes.
Keller is a freshman, at 98 pounds; Gregory, a senior, at 106 pounds; and Fitzgerald, a senior, at 285 pounds.
