AMERICAN FALLS – The West Side Pirates turned a close game into a 15-point victory in the final minutes of a state tournament play-in game Thursday night, beating Declo 55-40.
Head coach Tyler Brown said it was a very close game until the last three minutes of the fourth quarter when Declo started fouling.
“I was very pleased with the composure of our players as they went to the line in the fourth quarter and particularly during the last three minutes,” he said. “We went nine for 10 in the fourth. That’s what you have to do to win close games,” he said.
The Pirates 13-10 now play North Star Charter on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Burley. The winner of that game will get a ticket to go to the state tournament. The loser is done for the year.
Jaxon Smart led West Side scoring with 15 points. Three other players all contributed in a balanced scoring attack. JD Cook had 13; Mason Lemmon 10; and Tate Fuller, nine.
