Officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s department and ambulance personnel were called out at about 10:55 p.m. Friday night in response to a 911 call from Swan Lake in which a boy said he had just returned home at 30790 S. HWY 91, to find his father had been shot.

According to a Saturday news conference, the victim was identified as Paul Danielson, 46. Investigators now believe he died from wounds sustained by gunshot, and that his 12-year-old son is the suspect. The child has been taken into custody.

When the call came in, dispatcher Dave Matthews contacted Bannock County Sheriff’s department after alerting local authorities to watch for a black Mazda allegedly seen leaving the house. Local sheriff’s deputies headed north. When they arrived at the county line, Bannock County Sheriff’s department asked that they stage at Thomas Merc in Swan Lake. First responders were advised to not respond to the scene, as it was not deemed safe. At 11:05, the boy reported that his father was dead, and that he did not feel that he, himself, was in danger. The site was cleared for emergency medical services at 11:17 p.m.
