The West Side Pirates survived a last-second three-point shot and defeated the Malad Dragons Tuesday night 48-47 in a first-round game of the 2A Fifth-district basketball tournament.
The game was close throughout, according to Head Coach Tyler Brown. “We had a one-point lead and they had the ball. They were going for a last-second three-pointer and it (the shot) just rimmed out,” he said. “We feel fortunate coming out with the win.”
Prior to the game, the two schools had shared victories against each other during the regular season.
West Side went 11 of 16 from the free throw line and was 5 of 7 in the fourth quarter. The Pirates also had balanced scoring. JD Cook finished with 14 points. Jaxon Smart and Mason Lemmon both had 10. Tate Fuller finished with 9.
The win propels West Side into a game on Thursday against Soda Springs at Soda. The Cardinals knocked off Aberdeen on Tuesday.
