It’s a good thing West Side boys built a sizable lead and played superbly during the first three quarters of basketball in Dayton on Wednesday.
The Pirates needed a 16-point cushion going into the fourth period in order to survive a Marsh Valley onslaught during the final six minutes of play. West Side won 46-45.
West Side led by double digits during most of the game and seemed to become complacent going into the final stanza. That’s when the Eagles attacked. A furious comeback erased any thoughts the Pirates had of winning big.
Marsh Valley had several opportunities to win the game, but couldn’t capitalize on last minute shots. The Eagles scored the last 10 points of the game. In that last quarter they sank four 3 pointers.
But the visitors missed a free-throw that would’ve tied the contest. They also missed on four shots in the last minute that could’ve won the game.
