A Preston family escaped injury early Thursday morning after their house was destroyed by fire.
Dan Buckingham and his family was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and managed to get out of the burning structure at 135 So. 300 West unharmed, according to Franklin County Fire District fire marshal Scott Martin.
He said the fire was reported at 12:36 a.m. and 17 local firefighters with four engines responded. Both city and county officers helped with traffic control, he added.
“When we arrived on scene the house was fully involved in fire,” he said. “We initially attacked it with an offensive effort. But because of the construction, we quickly took a defensive stance to protect firefighters from potential harm.”
Martin said it took firefighters quite a while to put the fire out and they were on scene four and one-half hours. There were no injuries to firemen, he said.
Martin said he estimates damage at $250,000 and said the official cause is still under investigation. However, he said the fire started in the attic area.
