West Side’s McCoy Roberts runs hard against the Malad defense on Friday.

MALAD – The win against Malad ended the Pirates’ regular season and earned them the title of District Champions.

The last time the Dragons and the Pirates faced each other was during last year’s state championship. Although both teams lost a lot of players, both knew there were still feelings held against each other, which was going to lead to a very intense game.

The first play was a 60-yard return for Malad. The Dragons came out strong, but it wasn’t long before West Side took their momentum with an interception with six minutes left in the first quarter. After getting the ball West Side scored.

West Side’s defense came out strong with another defensive stop. Jon O’Brien ran in a touchdown for 60 yards.

Going into halftime the score was 18-0 for the Pirates. The score gap just continued to grow as the score in the third quarter was 33-0. During the fourth quarter the Dragons managed to get a touchdown on the scoreboard and a two point conversion.

“After two years with Malad winning the district title, it was beginning to feel like they were taking too much control over the Fifth District. It was in our minds that night that we were going to win. We knew we were the better team and had to prove to ourselves that we could play four straight quarters,” said Tyler White, who had 13 carries for 74 yards.

Brett Thornley was a large contributor to the beginning of the game until he was out with an injury. He had seven carries for 97 yards. Another person who had a large influence on the outcome of the game was O’Brien who had 101 receiving yards.

The Pirates will play Glenns Ferry on Friday at 1 p.m. at West Side.
