A realignment of sports programs in the fifth and sixth districts is in its third year and there will be some changes.

Bonneville High School is moving to the 5A ranks. This will leave Preston competing against Pocatello, Century, Blackfoot and Rigby.

Preston athletic director Brent Knapp said Bonneville was over the enrollment number limit last fall.

“But the state works on a two-year rotation, so the Bees did not leave the 4A ranks until this summer,” he said.

And there will also be changes in the 2A district that includes West Side. Athletic director and West Side principal Tyler Telford said Bear Lake will drop from the 3A ranks to 2A and now be in competition with West Side, Malad, Soda Springs and Aberdeen.

“We usually have Bear Lake scheduled so it doesn’t really affect who we play during our season,” said Telford. “But it does amp up our district tournament situations by adding another team to beat in order to qualify for state. Bear Lake is very competitive with several tough programs.”
