To help fight what it calls “the significant impact porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) is having on U.S. pork producers,” including those in Franklin County, the USDA has announced $26.2 million in funds to combat the disease.
The agency also said a federal order has been issued requiring reporting of new detections of the virus to its Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service or state animal health officials.
“In the last year it has been estimated PEDv has killed some seven million piglets.”
