At least two Franklin County Forest Service campgrounds will be open this year to recreational users over Memorial Day weekend, and large crowds are expected with partly-cloudy skies and warm temperatures predicted.
Potable water should be available at Willow Flat and Albert Moser in Cub River Canyon.
Willow Flat, the largest and most popular campground in the county, will have as many camping sites open as possible. That number depends on how fast the snow melts.
Dennis Deuhren, district Forest Service ranger based in Montpelier, said he expects both campgrounds to be busy.
“There will be motorized access, including four-wheelers on some trails in the area.
“But things could be limited on Hillyard Canyon and many other roads and trails in the area this year because of the snow we received in February and March,” he said.
Willow Flat Campground offers the public 54 camping units, three group picnic areas, an amphitheater and a game area.
Albert Moser Campground is also along the Cub River in the canyon area, but much lower in elevation. It provides nine camping units. A water-system upgrade project was completed there last summer, said officials.
The Emigration Canyon Campground, off State Highway 36 near the summit of Strawberry Canyon between Preston and Montpelier, won’t be open until the middle of June.
