After lop-sided victories at the district meet at Soda last week, the boys’ and girls’ track teams will be leaving Thursday for the state championships in Middleton on Friday and Saturday.
The district tournament was held on Tuesday and Thursday. With a win of 113 to 77, the boys’ team captured its seventh-straight district championship. The girls’ team win of 118 to 88 marked its fourth win. In both cases, Soda Springs took second.
The 800m, 1600m, and 3200m district titles were all earned by West Side’s Carlton Baird, who was also a member of the medley relay team that placed first. Last year Baird won the 1600m state championship and currently is ranked first in all three races at the state level. He will be a great contributor of points for the boys’ team, as they seek another state trophy.
Besides the medley team, the 4×100 and the 4×200 relay teams also took first at district. Zach Hatch won the pole vault. This was the first year he has competed in this event. Neils Stegelmeier won the shot put with a mark of 42-01.
Following Aberdeen’s Oscar Klassen, Triston Cox took second in both the 110m and 300m hurdles, almost catching him in the 300m. In the 110m, Cox sits right behind top-ranked Klassen. So both state hurdle races will be exciting to watch.
