West Side’s TJ Stokes came home with a fifth-place medal at the state wrestling tournament in Boise last weekend. AJ Frankman , Taylor Beckstead and Derek Wedel also represented the Pirates.
After having a bye at the beginning of the tournament, Stokes wrestled Dakota Murdock, a junior from Ririe with a 12-8 record.
Stokes pinned his opponent at 2:39, moving on to wrestle Drew Heyder. Heyder, a sophomore from Malad, beat Stokes and took second place.
Stokes went on to wrestle Murdock once more and won. F r a n k man (220) battled Noah Grossman, a junior from Marsing High School. Grossman had a daunting 48-7 record, but Frankman, who had a season record of 5-12, gave him a fight.
Wes Kirpatrick was Beckstead’s first opponent. Beckstead (195) had a season record of 11-11, and Kirpatrick had a 31-13 record.
He lost to Kirpatrick, who went on to place sixth in the 195-weight class.
Wedel (195) easily won his first match against Walker Gehring (3-28) in 41 seconds. He then lost to Nick Anderson from Firth, who ended up taking fourth place.
His final match, a loss, was against Anthony Benavidez, who placed fifth.
