West Side’s boys’ basketball team lost two close games last week.
On Wednesday the Pirates lost to the Dragons in Malad, 55-50, and then to the Bear Lake in Montpelier, 60-57.
This week the Pirates have only one game. On Wednesday they will play at Marsh Valley, who the Pirates beat earlier this year 67-38.
The Pirates started off strong against Malad and at the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 12.
West Side scored only five points in the second and the halftime score was 27-19 in the Dragons’ favor.
The Pirates fought back in the fourth and almost caught up, but the effort wasn’t quite enough.
Wyatt Beckstead led scoring for West Side with 16 points. He was followed by Kaden Bingham with 11.
West Side’s improvement over the season showed early on in the game against Bear Lake. The Pirates played the Bears in the first game of the season and lost 57-30. The halftime score was 35-31 for Bear Lake.
Bear Lake extended its lead early in the fourth to 11 points. The Pirates caught up, though, and in the final seconds the score was tied at 57.
Bear Lake tried to make one final layup in the game, and West Side’s Tristen Cox attempted to take the charge. Referees called a blocking foul on Cox with zero seconds on the clock. The call was argued strongly and a technical was called against West Side. Bear Lake made all three foul shots.
