Boone Smith has been hired as department head and chief probation officer of Franklin County Probation. The appointment was effective Dec. 24.
Smith, who has been with the department for 11 years as a probation officer, fills the position held by Guy Ebanez. Ebanez submitted a letter of resignation to county commissioners on Dec. 10, due to health concerns.
Smith said it’s an honor to be able to take over for Ebanez.
“There’s some big shoes to fill. Ebanez built the department during his 20 years as department head. He’s done a commendable job and worked with thousands of kids and parents during that time. He had a way of working with juveniles,” said Smith.
“Ebanez has been committed to juvenile probation and parole over the last two decades. Since he submitted his resignation, he’s come in and helped me out during this transition process and said he would continue to help out as needed. I’ve been brought up to speed on a lot of cases. He’s helped me go through a number of files,” Smith said.
Commissioner Scott Workman said Ebanez is retiring on his own terms.
“I personally appreciate him and his service to the Franklin County community,” said Workman. “I’ve talked with our local magistrate judge and judges in Pocatello. All seem pleased with the appointment of Smith.”
