Utah State Football Records First Shutout in a Decade With 13-0 Win Against Colorado State

By USU Sports Information
LOGAN, Nev. – Senior running back Joey DeMartino had a career-high 35 carries for 127 yards and Utah State’s defense limited Colorado State to just 38 yards rushing in posting its first shutout since 2003 with a 13-0 win here Saturday afternoon at a chilly and windy Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium.

With the win, Utah State improved to 7-4 overall and 6-1 in Mountain West action, while Colorado State slid to 6-6 overall and 4-3 in MW play. USU also assured itself of three-straight winning seasons for the first time since 1978-80 with the victory Saturday.

Colorado State entered the game averaging 214.8 rushing yards per game, but was held to just 38 total yards on the ground on 34 attempts for an average of 1.1 yards per carry. CSU also had 147 passing yards on the day and finished the game with just 185 yards of total offense, which is a season-low for an Aggie opponent.

The Utah State defense limited Colorado State running back Kapri Bibbs to 54 yards on 18 carries. Bibbs entered the game ranking first in the Mountain West and eighth in the nation with an average of 130.8 yards per game, while leading the nation with 25 rushing touchdowns. In his last two games, Bibbs had scored 10 touchdowns on the ground and rushed for 603 yards.

Utah State finished the game with a season-low 191 yards of total offense as it had 148 rushing yards to go along with a season-low 43 passing yards, which are its fewest since 2010.

DeMartino, who scored the game’s only touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third quarter, recorded his third 100-yard rushing game in his last four outings and his fifth of the season and his career. He also went over 1,000 yards for his career in the contest, becoming just the 26th player in school history to accomplish that feat. Furthermore, DeMartino’s 35 carries were the most by an Aggie since 2001 when Emmett White had 38 carries against Weber State.

Senior linebacker Jake Doughty posted a team-high 12 tackles for his seventh double-digit tackle outing of the season and 11th of his career to lead a Utah State defense that posted four sacks and two interceptions on the afternoon as senior safety Maurice Alexander, senior cornerback Tay Glover-Wright and sophomore nose guard Travis Seefeldt each had 1.0 sacks, while junior linebacker Zach Vigil and freshman defensive tackle Ricky Ali’fua each had 0.5 sacks. Zach Vigil and redshirt freshman linebacker Nick Vigil each recorded their first career interceptions in the contest.

Utah State also performed well on special teams as junior punter Jaron Bentrude boomed a career-high eight punts inside the 20 as part of his nine punts on the day as Colorado State’s average starting field position was its own 16 yard-line, while Utah State’s average starting field position was its own 49. USU was also 2-of-3 on field goals during the game.

After a defensive battle kept the game scoreless for the first 29:34 seconds, Utah State broke through with a 24-yard field goal by junior placekicker Nick Diaz with 26 seconds left for a 3-0 Aggie lead that they took into halftime.

Utah State then took the second half kickoff and marched down the field, with DeMartino scoring from a yard out and Diaz split the uprights for a 10-0 Aggie advantage with 10:21 to go in the third quarter. During its only touchdown drive of the day, USU went 69 yards in 11 plays and used 4:34 off the clock.

Early in the fourth quarter, Nick Vigil intercepted a Garret Grayson pass, setting Utah State up at the CSU 29. Four plays later, Diaz drilled a 44-yard field goal for a 13-0 USU lead with 9:59 left in the game. The Aggies’ defense kept the shutout in tact by getting pressure with all four of its sacks coming in the final period to seal the win.

Utah State continues its two-game homestand to wrap up regular-season play on Saturday, Nov. 30 against Wyoming in a Noon kickoff.
