It was another big defensive night for the Preston Indians. The defense shut down the Blackfoot Broncos’ high-scoring offense and escaped with a 7-3 conference victory at home Friday night.
Preston was able to score its only touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter and that was all the Indians needed. Courd Jones scampered 14 yards for paydirt and broke free from four would-be tacklers for six points.
Blackfoot’s only score came midway through the first quarter on a 22-yard field goal. After that initial score it was a defensive battle the rest of the game.
“To hold Blackfoot out of the end zone was just great,” said head coach Nick Hyde. “I’m just so proud of our defense. This was our first win in a long, long time over Blackfoot and our first conference victory this year.
“I’m also happy with our offense. We racked up some pretty good runs. Jones ran especially hard and got over 150 yards. Kaden Cole also looked really good, running for 94 yards. It appears like he’s overcome an early-season ankle injury.”
Preston now prepares for 3A Shelley in another home game on Friday at O.R. Cutler Field.
“We’re not overlooking Shelley at all. They are a good team. They played in the 4A Conference for a couple of years before dropping back down to 3A,” said Hyde. “We’ve got game films of Shelley and will be watching them all week and planning our attack. We’ve got no significant injuries to worry about.”
Following Jones’ touchdown, Preston’s defense stepped things up again and came up with two significant fourth-down stops in the final three minutes of the contest. Cole ended any hope of a comeback by the Broncos when he intercepted a pass with 35 seconds left.
Indian quarterback Austin Smellie threw for 59 yards. Preston Hobbs had 31 receiving yards. Preston is now 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.
