West Side cross country teams traveled to Soda Springs for the annual Cardinal Classic on Saturday for their second meet this season. Both girls and boys were divided into junior varsity and varsity, and as a whole, the day went well with several new personal records.
This year West Side’s girls team, coached by Stacey Olson, has grown immensely from years previously. Sixteen girls are currently on the team, which is by far a record for the program.
“We have an incredible team. For the first time in West Side history, we have a full varsity and junior varsity team,” said Olson. “In our first two meets, every girl has improved her time by 30 seconds to five minutes. Their progress is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will accomplish this year.”
Four seniors, Whitney Cox, Alyssa Nielsen, Millie Geddes and Kelsi Chugg, co-captain the team this year.
The boys went to Soda to prove their potential as a contender for the district title this year. Soda Springs, who won the district title last year, beat West Side at the Cardinal Classic. But Coach Joseph Grimm sounded optimistic at the possibility of the team improving enough over the season to beat the Cardinals. The team is led by Carlton Baird, Ethan Porter and Zach Hatch.
On Friday, the cross-country teams will travel to Idaho Falls for the Tiger/Grizz Invitational.
