Municipal elections around the corner
By ROBERT S. MERRILL
Municipal elections across Franklin County are looming on the horizon and the filing deadline for mayoral and council positions are now open.
The filing period started on Monday and closes on Friday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m., according to Franklin County Election’s Clerk Camille Larsen. County clerks across Idaho are now in charge of all elections in their respective counties.
“Those interested in running for a city/ town election can pick up the appropriate paperwork from city clerks,” she said. “Those seeking office in each community need signatures on a filing petition from five registered voters living in the respective towns.
“If the candidate chooses not to seek signatures, he/she can pay a $40 non-refundable filing fee. The paperwork and/or fee needs to be returned to the various city clerks by 5 p.m. on Sept. 6 to be valid.”
Larsen said absentee balloting for the Nov. 5 election begins on Oct. 4 and can be done at the Franklin County Courthouse in Preston. Polling places for the actual elections will be announced later.
