DAYTON – West Side opens the football season on Friday at home against the Firth Cougars and head coach Tyson Moser said the contest will be a great opportunity for the Pirates to see how they match up with the best this early in the season.

“Firth has a very good team this year and will be in the hunt for a state championship. So it will be a challenge for sure,” he said.

“Our team is motivated to play hard, since Firth ended our season in the semifinals last year.

“We are very familiar with each other and both teams will be prepared. So first games often come down to who executes the best and who makes the least first-game mistakes.”

Moser said he still has not decided who will start at quarterback.

“It’s a toss-up between Matt Turnbow and Peyton Brown. Turnbow is a junior and Brown is a sophomore,” he said.

“So for a couple games I may just play them both and see what happens. Trevor Montes, last year’s quarterback, will be at the running back position.”
