The first annual Relay for Life event culminated at the Preston High School track on Friday and Saturday August 2-3. Thirty-six teams and 483 participants raised $68,137.89, more than doubling a goal set early this summer.

An all-night program started off with a survivor lap at 6 p.m. Friday and events continued until 6 a.m. on Saturday.

The highlight for many was a luminary ceremony where paper bags dedicated to loved ones lost to cancer, as well as survivors, lined the track lighting the way for those walking with glow sticks in support of them.

The fundraiser earned an award for the most growth in Idaho this year as organizers exceeded their goals in every aspect. Savanah Salvesen was given an award by the Relay for Life Committee for being the Top Fundraising Youth.

Many are already thinking about how to make it even better next year.
