A Preston Junior High School teacher has received an award for “World’s Best Teacher” thanks to the efforts of one of her students.

RODEO JAY JENSEN 5X3

Seventh-grade English teacher Jan McCarthy was presented the award Thursday by Poole and Willis Orthodontics, of Logan and Smithfield. They come to Preston once per month.

The orthodontic firm sponsored an essay competition for their young patients. The patients had an option to nominate a teacher for the award by writing a one-page essay about why he/she should be given the award, according to officials.

Riley Jones, a seventh-grade student at the school, nominated McCarthy and won. Officials from Poole and Willis Orthodontics visited McCarthy’s class on Thursday and presented the award, along with donuts and drinks for the students.

Riley’s essay reads in-part, “she is the best teacher and makes every kid feel good and special… her personality and way of teaching is awesome!”
