Cindy Smith, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life event chairperson, announced they are holding a kick-off event on April 3, at 6 p.m. at Pop ’N’ Pin Lanes, 411 S. Highway 91.
Anyone interested, including friends, family, neighbors, caregivers, cancer survivors or anyone else, is invited to attend. The kick-off is generally a time when those in attendance learn about the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives faster by helping people stay healthy, find cures and fight a disease that plagues the world today.
Smith said they plan to introduce this year’s Relay For Life to the community. “This is the first time it has been done in our community,” said Smith. “We are trying to do it on rodeo weekend so we are doing a cowboy theme.”
The relay is a fundraising activity where people walk around the track and remember those who have been touched by cancer. Generally cancer survivor’s lives are celebrated and those who have lost the battle with cancer are remembered.
“We have a committee of about 20 people. It means a lot to all of us and we are excited to bring it to Preston,” Smith said. Jen Smith, the publicity chair, said they came up with the theme of “Cowboy Up for a Cure.” She took some photographs to use for their posters. They hope use of the posters will help get people to turn out to the event.
