Franklin County brought some fire to the state wrestling tournament at ISU’s Holt Arena last week with three wrestlers from Preston High and two from West Side fighting their way to a place on the medals stand.
Preston senior Cameron Dietrich battled to third place at 113 pounds, defeating Justin Holman of Bonneville in the final minute of his match. Senior Devin Porter scored a victory over Hoobler of Lakeland, 8-1, to clinch fifth place at 120.
Sophomore Kieton Keller racked up a major decision, 14-4, over Hunt of Blackfoot, to take fifth at 106 pounds.
The Indians placed 13th out of 24 teams at the tournament, with heavyweight Tayson Reid adding to the team point total.
West Side took six grapplers to the tournament. Out of the six, seniors Carson Roberts and McCoy Roberts placed. Both brought back consolation championships, placing third.
Carson won at 120 over Garcia of Valley, with a pin coming at 2:04. McCoy won a decision over Speelman, of Kootenai, 8-4.
McCoy came back after losing in the semifinals round when he was pinned in the second round against Melba wrestler, Troy Richardson, who went on to win his second consecutive state title.
Carson dominated after losing in the quarterfinals. He got four out of his five victories by fall, two being second-round pins.
The Pirates took 16th out of 37 teams in the 2A competition.
